A new date for G-T anniversary Comments

First, apologies to those folks who reacted to the news I posted here a couple of weeks ago about the Gazette-Times’ 100th anniversary open house, which we had scheduled at one time for today — Monday, June 15.

The date has changed, to Wednesday, July 1. The time stays the same, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Here’s the reason behind the date change: At the time we set our original plans, we were relying on accounts of the merger of the Corvallis Gazette with the Corvallis Times that placed the date of the first combined edition of the papers on June 15, 1909.

But then, Theresa Novak, our city editor and editorial-page editor, working with Mary Gallagher from the Benton County Historical Society, happened to find a copy of that first edition.

The date of that first edition? July 2, 1909.

So we moved our celebration back two weeks to July 1. — but I never posted an update on my blog. Again, my apologies. (We picked July 1, by the way, because we thought a lot of people would be leaving town for a long July Fourth celebration beginning on that Thursday, July 2.)

The invitation still stands — and look for much more about the celebration in the next couple of weeks in the G-T.
