Friday’s Entertainer features a preview of this Sunday’s concert with the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra. I had a good time writing the story and I enjoyed interviewing Marlan Carlson, the orchestra’s conductor and music director. I also found myself increasingly fascinated by the big piece on the program Sunday, Shostakovitch’s 10th Symphony.
The predictable result: I had way more material than I could fit into the story appearing in the Entertainer.
Normally, that stuff stays on the cutting-room floor for good reason, but — take my word for it — the additional material this time out is good stuff that you may want to check out. It features notes about the other pieces on the program and additional comments from Carlson about preparing the orchestra to perform a rigorous piece like the Shostakovitch symphony.
That’s why it was nice to have the ability to take the extra material and post it online: You’ll find the sidebar attached to the main piece online (click here to go to the main story) or you can access it directly by clicking here.
I was impressed by the orchestra at its last concert and I’ll be very interested to hear how it tackles the Shostakovitch symphony. Maybe I’ll see you there.
